One of the greatest things about paddling is that it can appeal to such a huge range of people. Just about anyone can enjoy being on the water in a canoe or kayak at whatever level they are comfortable with. Whether you're doing it for exercise, adventure or relaxation, it's easy to get into. You can be as serious and competitive or as laid back as you want. There's no right or wrong way to go (keeping in mind safety and legalities) when it comes to paddling, if you're enjoying yourself, that's all that matters.
Lessons are never a bad idea for the sake of safety, but the average individual can enjoy the sport quite easily with little to no instruction.
