A life jacket for each person is required by law to be aboard any vessel. We recommend that it be worn when in a kayak or canoe. Maryland state law requires that anyone under the age of 13 must wear a life jacket when in a vessel less than 21 feet in length.
Make sure the jacket is sized correctly, comfortable and properly adjusted. Sometimes the flotation panel on the back of the jacket will interfere with the seat back in the kayak. Our advice: while trying on a prospective life jacket, sit in the kayak you own or intend to buy and then check for compatibility with the seat.
Be aware that life jackets may have different features, such as the number of pockets for safety gear, towing belts, reflective patches and lash tabs.
